Many of you’ve got seen our previous posts about our involvement with Operation Shower, a 501 c(3) non-profit
organization that hosts fabulous baby showers for military spouses to ease the weight of deployment. We at Carousel Designs were honored to sponsor several Operation Shower events within the past year, with many more within the works!
To make amends for what happened at two of the showers we sponsored in 2011 (one involving First Lady Michelle Obama and Martha Stewart!) investigate cross-check our previous blog posts, “Supporting Our Military Families” and “Operation Shower: Red, White & Coo.”
LeAnn Morrissey, Chief Shower Officer, Operation Shower
We are very excited to announce our sponsorship of the subsequent Operation Shower event, if you want to be hung on January 24th in San Diego! a bunch of deserving military spouses should be treated to the infant shower in their dreams on the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines Golf Club. Co-hosted by the PGA Tour and Birdies for the Brave, it really is certain to be a memorable event.
In order that will help you get to understand Operation Shower and their woman-in-charge, Chief “Shower” Officer, LeAnn Morrissey, we put her through some pretty extensive Q & A. Below are the highlights of our interview!
How did Operation Shower start?
In 2007, I asked my uncle what more i may do beyond sending him care packages while he was deployed to Iraq. He (and his wife) suggested I send cards to the pregnant wives of 4 men who were deployed overseas with him. This little bit of encouragement or celebration in their imminent arrivals, he thought, would brighten their lives slightly. i used to be happy to aid but desired to do greater than just send a card.
After brainstorming and talking with friends and family, i made a decision to send all of the expecting military spouses an entire baby shower — a “shower in a box”. I had great support putting these boxes together and we shipped them to every mom. We had one of these great response from the moms and their spouses overseas that we knew it made a difference and was something we would have liked to do again and again. The moms felt recognized and “spoiled” for an afternoon and the fathers felt relief that their family were being remembered and joy at celebrating the child at the way.

How many showers have you ever hosted to date?
We now take our “showers in a box” concept to a far larger scale and host full baby showers for giant groups of military families on bases or other locations. We have now, so far, hosted 18 showers for Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and National Guard units around the country. We’ve got showered over 600 military families.
How has Operation Shower transformed since 2007?
Operation Shower has transformed in lots of ways, but in regards to our core values and what we strive to convey, we’re the same. We’ve grown from sending individual boxes to moms to doing large scale showers. We’ve definitely increased the selection of moms/families we will reach. In previous years, the very best choice of showers we had completed was four, for 100 moms total. In 2011, we completed seven showers for 300 moms. So we now have definitely expanded our outreach and wish to host more showers this year and reach much more families.
We pride ourselves on really spoiling the moms-to-be and guaranteeing it’s a “baby shower to recollect.” They deserve the fitting and we work to supply it. Our Chief Event Planner works with designers and event planners around the country to come back up with the way to make it special. They regularly donate their services and time and we couldn’t be more thankful.
A large portion of our ability to achieve more moms is the support from companies corresponding to Carousel Designs and Birdies for the Brave and in addition from individuals and other companies around the country, who donate product and dollars.
We are still figuring out of the basement and also have an extremely small staff, but we’ve got supporters around the country — actually, I should say, the moms-to-be have support around the country!
What is your favorite portion of the shower process?
My favorite part is usually shower day and meeting the moms. i like the result of having the ability to present them with the showers in a box and the opposite gifts we’ve got collected — and likewise for them for you to meet the various supporters and volunteers from Operation Shower who truly need to recognize them for his or her service. With the ability to connect the volunteers and donors with the moms and feature them say “thank you” in person is a good feeling and that i believe the moms leave truly understanding that we’re sincere in our respect and admiration for them and that we’re concerned with ensuring they have got an afternoon of fun!
Is there a specific shower that’s been your favorite up to now? A most memorable moment?
It is so hard to pick out a favourite, as each shower really is so unique. Each shower includes new moms, obviously, with their very own unique stories and every community that comes out to assist does so of their own way. It was an honor, though, to have one among our showers last year attended by Mrs. Obama and Dr. Biden as a part of their Joining Forces campaign. It was an exceptional validation that Operation Shower is creating a difference and doing something of serious value.
Another truly memorable moment for me was on the close of 1 of our showers. An older gentleman volunteer who was there to assist load the “showers in a box” came as much as the rostrum of his own accord and said he just had to say thanks to us for doing this. He said he had served in earlier wars and his wife delivered and raised their children while he was away for long stretches. He wished she had something like our showers. This was so meaningful to me — as i think that not just are we honoring those serving now, but those families who served previously but weren’t recognized as they ought to had been.

What is your advice for somebody who desires to get entangled of their community and make a difference, as you’ve?
Follow your heart. i really like honoring military families; i like giving gifts; and that i love helping moms-to-be. This is because Operation Shower means such a lot to me. i think that’s why it also touches such a lot of others. So, my advice is to discover something that you simply truly love and do it by some means. Have the opportunity to do what you like — besides the fact that it’s only a couple of hours per week or a month. Try various things until you discover what works for you. i attempted such a lot of different care package ideas and tips on how to help moms and new business ideas (some really bad ideas) until i discovered the one who works for me and makes a difference.
What are you eager for in 2012 and beyond?
I am anticipating meeting new military families and showering them with love! i’m waiting for seeing what creative ideas our team comes up with to do that within the best way possible. We’re in quest of how one can help local bases have their very own showers with Operation Shower’s support. It is a project i actually would like to pursue so one can reach much more families. i’m eager for seeing military families haven’t any doubt that they’re appreciated!
